Ontario Muskie Fishing

Ontario Muskie fishing tips and fishing facts.

The muskie's moody and unpredictable nature has made muskie fishing an obsession for many anglers, and Ontario lodges and resorts their destination. Avid fishermen commonly use foot-long plugs and spinners, and baitfish weighing over a pound. They use stout baitcasting rods and 30 to 50 pound dacron line, always with a wire leader. Hooked muskies wage a spectacular but usually short battle. They leap and make powerful runs that often break the line or straighten the hook.

Fish are the muskies' favorite food but like northerns, they eat whatever they can find, including frogs, crayfish, mice, muskrats, and ducklings. Muskie fishing requires some serious concentration, and fishermen must stay alert to the dangers. At most lodges and resorts in Northern Ontario the owners can tell tales of wounded warriors who have suffered the bite of a boated muskie, imbedded hooks, and have scars that record the event.
